Stout ramparts, forts and bastions, colonial Dutch architecture and a pleasant air of a bygone age proclaim Galle as the 17th - 18th century centre of Dutch rule in Sri Lanka. Apart from numerous Dutch monuments, this southern seaport is also famous for hand made lace, jewellery and ebony carving.
